The Navajo rugs are the most popular American Indian rugs. The Navajo People have made blankets for personal use for centuries now. Upon the coming of the railroad era, travelers going westward began buying these Navajo blankets for display. With great influence from Easterners and traders, the American Indian weavers started incorporating more elaborate designs using heavier materials to create these awesome rugs. The major trading posts have developed their own designs. Up to the present, many rug designs have been named after the trading post or region where the design had originated.
Unlike weavers of other nations, American Indians continue the use of the more difficult vertical loom. Weaving a rug in this manner is difficult and time consuming. With patience, persistence and passion, the weaver artistically crafts a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
